A tagsale kind of night by *magpie-poet:iconmagpie-poet:

A Tag Sale Type of Night

Paw through the shining hoard
captured in a fly fishing box—
embossed best quality plastic—
in a pseudoscientific order.

-throw away, come back to me-

Blue stone and battle axe earrings.
Not a personal statement! Just
perfect for a character
I never got to play.

-throw away, come back to me-

Blue vial necklace, pewter knot.
Very cool, if made for a flatter girl.
Why did I think a glowstick added
was a good idea? *never again*

-throw away, come back to me-

Boomerang with opal doublet,
small fire smoldering under
faulty adhesive—but real opal,
and a gift to boot.

-throw away, come back to me-

Wire wrapped fluorite—lovely
Stone, a dark purple eye. Reminder
of a summer’s day, but damned if
it doesn’t tangle with everything.

-throw away, come back to me-

Stone pendant on black silken cord.
Its weight reassuring the first morning
I woke with ill-thought out red hair,
something to toy with at a concert.

-throw away, come back to me-

Chain mail choker, now one of many,
and not the best. He’d needed the money
to pay off that ticket. And I liked it,
so heavy and sleek.

-throw away, come back to me-

Stoke the glass into flames, twist
the metal black and snakelike.
Stone eye look back once more
And tell me what you saw.

-throw away, come back to me-

you ever look at your accumulated stuff-gifts, mementos, all that, and wish there was some sort of spell, cast those things into the fire and regain the moments trapped in them and the people you've lost since? or is that one more insomnia rant?

It's like you're picking through your magic charms, and the refrain really gives the feeling of casting and plea, with the balance of loss and gain. Evocative and beautiful.

ps. And just what the heck is tag sale anyway? I see signs for them sometimes, but I have no idea what they are.

does garage sale make more sense? it's when you set a day and label all the crap you want to get rid of a dollar and set it up in your front lawn or driveway and put up signs (my cousin puts an add in the paper) and you try to get some money for your junk. though often it becomes haggling where someone goes this isn't worth that, i'll give you 5 cents. then gets pissed if you say no. (i've also had people bring their kids over, let them play with the toys, then refuse to buy the toy once the kid breaks it.)

Oh, yard sales, garage sales, and flea markets are standard fare around here. On the island, auctions are common too. They stick out a sign on the side of the road, and you wouldn't believe the standstill of traffic, as about half the island population tries to squish in by the side of the road.

But I've only seen a sign for a tag sale once. Drove by it, having no idea what it was. Were they selling tags, was it some kind of raffle? It must be some private thing by a business or estate, exclusive. The sign is tiny, formal looking. I wonder what the rules are. Maybe you have to bring your own tags...

Apparently, they just weren't smart enough to use the expression everyone knows :P

mmm... a 'trinkets' poem by a magpie, what could be better? i am in awe of how much love one poem can inspire... it does make one think of all they have to be thankful for and i tend to keep mementos by the truckload... it makes for memory-weights, theyre like paperweights just more random in size...

:giggle: that's part of the reason for magpie. people are like cleaning is easy, you just get rid of stuff. :jawdrop: my *stuff* helps me remember. and i make *stuff* too. so it multiplies :p cleaning is overrated anyways, methinks!

shiny things... memories... ticket stubs and scribbled notes from beloved friends... those are treasures... i cant part with much either... i keep these large, paper-bloated monstrosities of scrapbooks... it keeps the chaos in one spot

yeah. i have one for each year of university, except they got too big to fit anywhere, so they've been sitting on my floor forever now.
