Sea and Sky Pendant for A Calendar of Tales

Description

Okay, so my inner fangirl caved. Despite not having the illustrative skill I went ahead and did something for the A Calendar of Tales thing. Being me it was a pendant. (Since I've yet to make a Stormhold or Dream pendant-someday...)

It's odd how much time of day matters for lighting. This picture was taken in late day natural light, and the stone has a greenish cast. In the photos I took before running off to work this morning you see more turquoise blue with green underneath. Sitting next to me it's flickering between both in the artificial light.

This piece is was inspired by the February story. It features a pendant lost on a beach.

The only description of the pendant is "untarnished by sand or by saltwater." Not much, but I wanted a high shine to show an ageless quality. I used non-tarnish fine silver over copper wire- fine silver is much whiter and fresher than sterling, so it seemed appropriate.

And the end of the last line "where...the skies and seas are one." I admit I sometimes think of colors in terms of gemstones, so my brain went "labradorite!" at that line without prompting. To me labradorite is always a bit magical and mysterious with its colors hidden in grey stone and sudden flashes.

Part of me wanted to make a super intricate piece, but I know how much trouble I have getting feldspars to show off their beautiful colors and this had to be a photogenic(ish) project. You guys have heard me curse up storms over that plenty of times before. So I opted for simple wrap on my favorite labradorite cab. The chain it's on is my second attempt at Viking knit. (Not quite finished-I realized I don't have the thicker wire to make a clasp, oops. But it isn't staying with this pendant anyway.)

To try to give it a seaworthy backdrop I used some shells and stones that a friend gave me. So a still life without the life part I guess...

Random backdrop trivia-some of you may have heard my story about wanting to bring home a pink rock from France when I was a little girl-that's the pink rock I lugged in my backpack through Southern France and Northern Spain and back to the States. Because mom said I could have it if I carried it at all times. And I still have it. SO THERE. (Yes, I'm such a packrat.)

Since I always forget to add sizes- almost 2 1/2" long by 1" wide
