Tiny Ammonite Earrings by magpie-poet Tiny Ammonite Earrings by magpie-poet
edit- someone bought one of these, so I've a tiny ammonite available either as a single earring or delicate pendant :)

14K gold fill and an ammonite pair. Well, one ammonite split. In January I stumbled onto a place that had some small ammonites in pairs. A bit smaller than I was hoping, but couldn't resist them and got too many...

These were really figity and slippy to make. I'm still trying to figure out the best style for ammonite earrings! These ammonites were a nice rich sort of honey brown, so I had to do them in gold and something a little more gentle in style.

The earrings are 1 5/8" from the top of the hooks, and are each about 5/8" at their widest.

Wonderful earrings! I'm glad someone bought them. :D

I always enjoy your descriptions, since I still do some jewelry work myself (nothing this intricate, though).

Well, one. I've had them long enough (and she's a good customer) so I figured I'd let it go.

Stunning work! And I also quite liked seeing them against the bright green!

I like how the wire in front follows the curve, they are really pretty.

I have had two ammonite pairs around for a year and can't decide on what exactly I want to do with them, but your picture makes me want to pick them up again now.

how do you split these?

I did not, I lucked out and found a place selling them split! Normally I get small ones just in halves and dig through basket after basket at mineral shows looking for ones that match well enough. (Like these guys, though I think they're a pretty good match job.) It's much easier to find the larger ones cut in half.

I'd love to learn how to cut stones, but it's not anything that's really taught around here, at least nowhere I've found. So I buy my fossils cut and cabs polished and just do cosmetic tweaking like a bit of sanding and such :)

I might be in the minority here, but I'd like to see the front of them to see the sutures on these suckers. :]

Okay, keep an eye out. I'll try to get a back shot and post to scraps. There isn't much visible. I think they'd be too fragile if totally cleaned off.

That's fine! Don't worry too much about it, I'm just curious for academic purposes, of course. ;)

Which is how I ended up getting several pairs. They were cute and it was late and I was tired and even more susceptible than usual. I need to offload a few to balance out my fossil habit... my paypal account is empty and there's a bead show and a huge antique show next weekend *cries* But hopefully the weather will be nice and at least I have multiple days off *in a row* for like the first time in three months!
