Photographing Stones

Tue Jan 27, 2009, 8:57 PM
  • Mood: Tired
  • Reading: a half dozen things at once
  • Watching: still sg-1
  • Drinking: tea
Any tips for taking pictures of stones? I wrapped a tourmelated quartz piece with a star diopside and am having even more trouble than usual with my photographs, especially with getting the star in the diopside to show.

Edit- Thanks for the tips, and apologies. I missed the news about the relevant to interests virus thingy and clicked, so I'm not sure if anyone is going to be getting junk from my way now. Sorry! I'll also take tips on how to stop that as well as on photography!

I have no idea. :( Best I can do with my camera is generally flash-fried snapshots that I manipulate into something else.

It's all about the lighting. Try indirect lighting.

Have you thought about making a light box? I hear that they work wonderfully for small objects. Here's a link to make one. [link] I've been meaning to make myself one but haven't yet.

I'll definitely second that one! I made my light box just using stuff I found around the house and it really helps when I'm taking jewelry photos. It's large enough to fit some props and various backgrounds (I have marble and granite tiles I use on occasion that give a nice, natural-looking background without being too distracting) but is still somewhat portable and makes a huge difference on capturing accurate colors. (We'll see how it does when I get around to finishing those moonstone and kyanite earrings...)

All that glitters has a high refractive index.

Got shinies?

When it comes to star stones, I've found that the best way to get the star to show is to find a very strong single light source - like the sun or a very bright flashlight like a pen light. You might also want to try taking an image of it using a flatbed scanner.

Just some suggestions. :)

I've not done well with my trial one thus far. Perhaps its too small, I find ti forcing me to angle photographs oddly.

It ends up looking like a dark pearl. Which is you know, great and all, just not what it is.

(If the pearls start photogrphing like stars I'm quitting :p )

cute icon, btw.

hmm. I've scanned fabric projects, but never stones. That's intriguing. Thanks!
