Class!

Tue Feb 10, 2009, 7:28 PM
  • Mood: Tired
  • Listening to: itunes
  • Reading: the magician's book
Edit- Apparently I'm an idiot, because I tried to make a tutorial and submit it here for ideas, but it seems that no matter what I do either it tells me that I need a preview image (which I supplied) or else it ONLY takes the preview image even though I loaded a word document as the actual deviation.

What am I doing wrong?

Oh, and is anyone else having issues going through their own gallery and sorting things?

-------------------------------------------------------------------

I got my first email relating to the earring class I offered to do for an adult ed program. I gave them the info, now I've got butterflies!

Any suggestions for teaching? I've taught friends, but never strangers.

It really helps me to keep a list or outline of what I'm teaching. That way, if you get a case of nerves, you've got a safety net. :)

No advice, I only teach kids...best of luck though!
And what do you think of the book? I read it last month and thought most of it was delightful.

I'd go in with hand-outs for everyone showing what to do step-by-step. This way people can take something home to refresh their memories, and some folks will be quite happy to work by themselves off the pictures rather than all bug you with questions to help them.

Other than that:
- Be attentive and offer help if you see someone struggling
- Demonstrate on your own piece and then have the other person do it on their piece while you watch and correct
- Don't breathe down anyone's neck, but tell them repeatedly you're there for them and encourage them to ask for help
- If you need for the whole group to follow steps together, monitor everyone to completion of one step before explaining and introducing the next step
- If you have 10-20% of folks lingering behind, and 80-90% ready for the next step(and bored)introduce the next step, set the group going and then visit with the laggers to get them up to speed

That's just some stuff I've learned from teaching bead classes. Hope it helps and Best of Luck!!!

Oh I loved it. I've a awful urge to write an embarassingly fawning letter to the author. It wasn't until college that I realized other people had that same relationship with those books!

And I really liked her writing style. Friendly and casual with a wonderful use of quotations but never ever simplistic. How many books do you run across that can use words like palimpsest (which I can hardly spell) as a metaphor and have it work? Or you know, use the word at all. I've only found it previously in discussions about manuscripts and used literally. For word fangirling, that's right up there with the end of S3 Doctor Who where there's a whole digression about the proper usage of decimate in the finale. I pretty much hated the episode, but for gave it on that basis alone :D

I'm working on one. Half the time the same list seems waaay to simple and short, then the next I wonder if it's too tough for newbies?

Thanks! It's just a super simple intro to earring making class, so we're just talking wrapped loops and such. I wouldn't think there much of a need, but it too a friend quite some time. I'd love to try to teach wirewrapping eventually, but that I know I need more practice tteaching friends first. And figuring how to do a proper tutorial.

It'll depend on the confidence of your students and how the day goes.

Maybe you can have additions to the simple list for those people that feel confident.

Once you've done it, you'll be able to adjust for the future. Being able to wing it if things don't work as you expect really helps, too!

I'm not generally good at winging it, but this is crafts. And I'm used to winging it there ;)
